BEIJING: Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif met Chinese
President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Beijing on Monday.
Mr Asif told Xi Jinping that Pakistan and China were strategic partners and delivered the Pakistani people’s goodwill to the Chinese
President.
He also claimed that Pakistan
was China’s all-weather friend and wished to see China play a greater role in global and regional affairs.
In turn, China’s leader commended Pakistan’s role as a member of the SCO.
Pakistan’s foreign minister also claimed that the upcoming informal meeting between Xi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi can help ensure regional peace and prosperity.
Ho
wever, the minister did raise the issue o
f atrocities occurring in Indian-held Kashmir when he met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Mr Asif also met Tajikistan’s Foreign Minister Sirodjidin Asl
ov at the SCO secretariat in Beijing, and both ministers agreed to bolster strategic and bilateral cooperation.
Khawaja Asif claimed that Pakistan and Tajikistan had historically strong ties and the two nations have strengthened co-operation in anti-terrorism and anti-narcotics.
